Aldara 5% cream is a prescription-only medication that is used to treat skin conditions caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The active ingredient in Aldara cream is imiquimod, which belongs to a group of medications called immune response modifiers. It works by stimulating the body’s natural defence system to help fight off HPV infection and the skin conditions it can cause. In clinical studies, Aldara cream was found to be effective in treating both external genital warts and certain types of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) caused by HPV.
